Mineral County Library to participate in Banned Book Week

| September 18, 2013 10:04 AM

Superior--The Mineral County Public Library will be observing Banned Book Week the fourth week in September.

Banned Book week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries.

A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objection of a person or a group. A banning is the removal of those materials.

“I knew we should participate when I found out that “Huckleberry Finn,” a world classic, was in danger of being banned,” Guna K. Chaberek, Director of the Mineral County Library, said. “This isn’t about any political agenda, it’s about Free Speech coupled with common sense.”

For more information of a list of challenged and banned books, please contact Guna at the Mineral County Library (822-3563).

The library at Superior is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:30 AM to 6 PM.

More information is also available from the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom at 1-800-545-2433, extension 4220, or bbw@ala.org.
