ALBERTON - Both Alberton high school boys and girls track and field competitors placed among the top student athletes at the Jim Johnson Invitational April 3 in Missoula.

Fourteen class B and C schools were at the meet, which was co-hosted by Alberton and Drummond schools at Dornblaser Field.

The Johnson Invitational was only the second meet to start the season, and per tradition it takes place at the University of Montana in Missoula. Although there was at least 17 different events, each Alberton team actually only participated in a handful of them.

The Alberton boys’ squad finished with 34 points placing seventh overall at the end of the day. Keir Sanzano timed in at 11.47 seconds and placed third out of the top six competitors in the 100-yard dash.

Sanzano also excelled in the 300-meter hurdles competition placing second out of the top six with a time of 42.62 seconds.

Two competitors from Alberton took top spots in the shot put competition.

Sanzano again placed second out of the top six in shot put throwing for a heavy score of 45-10, while Andrew Lommen finished just slightly below him at fourth with a 42-7. Lommen was in beast mode placing second overall in the discus portion of the tournament, with a score of 136-7.

The Alberton girls had similar success finishing ninth out of the top 14 teams with a score of 18. The girls competed in many of the same events as the boys where they placed high in the honors as well.

Delani Hanley finished strong in the discus competition taking the second spot with a high score of 103-9.

Ryan Vicek was close to the top spot in the javelin competition, however she placed third with a score of 110-1. Taylor Erdman finished fourth in high jump finishing with a 4-2 overall.

Since Alberton finished strong in this meet, this should set the stage for a successful season. Both track and field squads could still improve by the end of the season and finish off strong next month at the state meet, which is the last meet of the year at Great Falls.

Alberton’s next meet comes on April 10, as the teams head to Corvallis for the Darby Invitational.

Alberton track and field coach Rachael Clevenger wasn’t available for comment regarding both teams’ performance at the Jim Johnson Invitational.
