Superior proclaims National Service Recognition Day

| April 10, 2014 3:02 PM

SUPERIOR - This week history was made, as one of more than 1,760 mayors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico united in support of national service. Together, we represent more than 110 million Americans, or one-third of the U.S. population. In Mineral County Tuesday marked the second annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. In Montana 36 Montana mayors participated including Mayor Roni Phillips. RSVP Coordinator for Mineral County Mary Jo Berry, welcomed members of the community and Thanked all the volunteers who are essential to the success and strengthening of countless programs and services in the community.

The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is a nationwide bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service in our communities, to thank those who serve, and to encourage citizens to give back to their communities.

Given the many social needs facing our communities – and the fiscal constraints facing government at all levels - organizations are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective solution to meet their needs. A coordinated day of recognition presents a unique opportunity to spotlight the impact of national service, thank those who serve, and encourage more citizens to get involved.

In Mineral County volunteers do tutoring and mentoring students, supporting food banks and homeless shelters, restoring city parks, removing blight and creating safer neighborhoods, supporting veterans and military families, responding to disasters and emergencies, providing health services, and managing community volunteers, plus much more. They gather people in roundtable discussions and focus groups so that they can learn what the needs of the community are and together decide how to create a better future for the people of Mineral County.

Superior Mayor Roni Phillips proclaimed April 1, 2014 as National Service Recognition Day, thanked the volunteers, photos were taken and punch and cake were served.
