SUPERIOR- The second annual hoop shoot hosted 24 teams from around the area over the weekend, and some students came from as far as Butte and Wallace, Idaho to participate.

The hoop shoot is put on each year to help pay for high school girls summer basketball, jerseys and travel, said Jeff Schultz, event organizer and high school girls head basketball coach.

The refreshment window was also open to make some extra cash for the event, selling doughnuts and coffee.

“We played ball for at least 13 straight hours on Saturday,” Schultz said.

The event continued for an additional nine hours on Sunday.

The community support was strong as spectators filled the parking lots and packed the bleachers at Superior High School and Superior Elementary School, ensuring the high school girls summer basketball would be fully funded.

The coaches for each team and the referees were all volunteers of the community, Schultz said.

Also, the winners of each bracket matchup didn’t leave empty handed either.

“Winners receive medals and a bracket poster,” Schultz said.

Every team in attendance played their hearts out as if winning the gold medals and bracket poster was equally important as any other game in their young playing careers.

Even though most of the games were low scoring for the most part, every team came out and played at a high level.

The hoop shoot followed many of the same rules as high school basketball. Each game was timed at two 16 minute halves, and overtime is two minutes if necessary.

On Saturday, the third and fourth graders of Frenchtown took on Superior. Frenchtown won that contest. Frenchtown was the No.1 seed in the bracket, and Superior was No. 2, respectively.

Ronan, No. 1 seed was set to take on No. 3 seeded Superior Sunday to determine the winner of the four team single elimination for fifth and sixth grade boys.

The Plains girls faced Thompson Falls in a thrilling bout as the game went into overtime and the score was tied at 10 after regulation. Thompson Falls pulled off the last minute victory taking the game at a score of 12-10.

In the girls four team single elimination, the third and fourth grade girls of Wallace defeated the No. 2 seeded Superior team.

Other brackets included eight team single elimination for seventh and eighth grade boys, and six team single elimination for seventh and eighth grade girls.
