HOT SPRINGS - The Superior track team was one of five schools to compete in the Dave Tripp Invitational on April 10.

Among others were Arlee, Noxon, Two Eagle River and of course Hot Springs, whose boys finished on top with a score of 376.

The Superior boys finished fourth with a score of 73 and must improve in upcoming competitions in order to overtake a team like Hot Springs in the future. Even though the team struggled in the final standings, Superior excelled in the discus and the shot put department as multiple players took top spots in the standings.

Superior’s Tanner Smith finished fifth in the 100-yard dash with a time of 12.9 seconds.

Nathan Lapinski placed second in the 1,600-yard dash with a time of 5:09.95. Lapinski took the top spot in the 3,200-yarder as well finishing with a time of 11:38.91.

Superior dominated in discus play with three athletes taking the top three in the overall standings. Jarrod Tippens finished first with a 123-11, Tanner Smith at second with 117-9 and Alex Billet at third with 106-8.

Superior took most of the shot put competition as Billet finished first with a score of 38-5, Smith second with 35-9 and Tippens at fourth with 33-8.

Smith placed second in the long jump competition as well. However, he tied with Jarod White from Hot Springs with a score of 18-9.

The pole vault was not contested at this week’s invitational.

The Superior girls also finished in fourth place on the day with a score of 33.

Marissa Koke took second in the 100-yard dash for Superior, finishing with a time of 14.6 seconds.

Kaylee Ray finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 26 seconds.

The girls had a strong showing in the javelin as well. Two Superior players were in the top six.

Those competitors were Koke, who finished third with a score of 75-5 and Danielle Ewoniuk at fifth with a 73-6 decision. Ewoniuk also represented Superior in the shot put competition finishing fourth with at 24-9.

There was another tie in the event as Koke and Rosa Dolson from Hot Springs both had the same score to put them in first place in the high jump, finishing at 4-6.

The pole vault was not contested for the girls either.

Superior must now focus on the upcoming Darby Invitational in Corvallis on April 17.

Both boys and girls track teams have been consistent in play up to this point and must continue to do so to remain competitive among other local area high schools.

After a few more competitions, there may be room for Superior at the top spot after all. The Bobcats can start focusing on the district meet which is only a mere five weeks down the road at Polson, followed by the weekend divisional round, and then the state competition to round out the month of May.
