THOMPSON FALLS - The St. Regis High School Track team took on the Thompson Falls Invitational April 17 in nearby Sanders County.

The girls track team finished in seventh place with a score of 14, which was good enough to best nearby-neighbor Superior who finished the day with a 9.5, and Noxon who finished last with 8.

However, these final scoring numbers are a mere shadow of Plains, who finished in first place with a 182, and Thompson Falls who finished at second with 108.

The St. Regis boys’ team also traveled to Thompson Falls, but were unable to place high enough in the standings to be awarded points. The boys of Thompson Falls finished in first with 131 points, Charlo was in second with 119.5, and Libby clawed out the final spot with a half point.

The St. Regis girls grabbed some accolades of their own with the ever consistent Ariana Jones placing third in the javelin competition with a score of 121-8.

Each week, Jones excels in javelin which has been the sweet spot for the Tigers track team this year. Last week in Bigfork, Jones finished fourth with a final score of 116-2.

Gabby Moeller reached high enough in the jumping competition to take the second spot with a final score of 4-10. Shey Hannum finished first for Thompson Falls with a perfect 5-0.

Medina Monie tied at the sixth spot in pole vault with Eula Fullerton of Arlee at 6-0. Jordan Ludeman of Charlo finished first with 8-6, and Angela Padden of Thompson Falls finished second with an 8-0.

The weather was decent enough in this one, although it was cloudy with traces of rain at the time of the competition. There was also a moderate breeze, which can affect the competitors who are in javelin or the ones who have to run long distances against the wind.

It is unclear if any of these conditions helped or hurt the teams that competed.

St. Regis is only in its third week of spring sports. The track season kicked off in Ronan on March 29, however, the team didn’t score enough points to place in the final standings which included Alberton and Loyola, who have scored consistently enough to beat their competitors.

The Tigers were in Bigfork last week, but the event was rained out and no final points were handed out to any school.

St. Regis will head to the Big Sky Invitational April 26 at Seeley Lake, followed by Whitefish on May 3.

St. Regis is constantly put to the test in every meet because they are mismatched compared to other teams who have a fairly large pool of athletes.

This always leaves the Tigers at a disadvantage when playing in larger school meets. A lot of St. Regis athletes also compete in other sports and school activities. However, there is still time to come out strong.
