THOMPSON FALLS - The Superior High School Track team struggled at the Thompson Falls Invitational April 17, where nine other schools participated.

The invite of away teams allowed locals like Plains and Thompson Falls to dominate the standings, as the Plains girls finished at first with a score of 182 and Thompson Falls finished second overall with a 108.

The Superior squad finished the day at eighth with a 9.5, down considerably from last week’s fourth place finish with a final score of 33.

The Superior boys didn’t fare much better, only finishing with a final score of seven on the day, which was good for the ninth spot. The Thompson Falls boys finished first with a score of 131.

Last week the Superior boys competed favorably finishing with a 73 at Hot Springs.

Superior’s Marissa Koke was among the girls leading stars finishing sixth in the 100-yard dash with a time of 14.27 seconds. McKenzie Stager, also of Superior, finished fourth in the 100 hurdles division with a time of 22.73 seconds.

Koke also finished fourth with a 4-4 in the high jump competition, right behind Gabby Moeller of St. Regis.

Superior’s ironman Jarrod Tippens took third in the discus portion with a 117-10 for the boys.

Tippens then turned around and threw for sixth in shot put with a 37-11.5.

Even though the weather was cloudy with traces of rain at meet time, all the teams were able to compete through the matches.

However, that isn’t always the case as inclement weather can force delays or cancellations.

Typically if a meet is called off, it’s likely that it won’t be made-up because most local schools don’t want to travel a second time.

Superior will need to be tougher following recent inconsistencies, and are still trying to improve, and compete at a high level as to not get tripped up going into divisional and state competitions at the end of May. The scores have fluctuated throughout the season, and to maintain a certain level of competitiveness, the Bobcats will need to try and beat every team with a higher game score.

Most teams are mismatched, some have more athletes while some have a minimum number of competitors.

Next week, Superior will head to Arlee, followed by Seeley Lake.

However, the main players on each team are playing hard and putting up decent scores, but it must be a team effort going down the stretch. Superior is still looking for players to step up to the plate and give the team an extra push to the finish line.

On May 10, Superior will meet other area teams in the Seeley Lake Invitational.

Alberton will be there, and has been a beast all season, if not one of the best teams, which has consistently placed high in scoring and the team is always ready to come out and compete. However, Superior will have their work cut out for them.
