Car show will rock June

CORRECTION: The original version of the article stated the incorrect date of the show. The correct date of the car show is June 7.

SUPERIOR - The Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show is alive and well, and will soon celebrate its fifteenth year!

Keeping up the momentum of an all-volunteer event can be difficult, and this year it almost slipped away.

After a call went out to all Chamber of Commerce members, Rosie Schreckendgust stepped forward to chair the Car Show Committee.

Schreckendgust is general manager of the Big Sky Motel, and an avid supporter of the local event.

“I just couldn’t see the Car Show go away for lack of a leader,” she said. “When I had my restaurant at the Old School, the Car Show was my best day of the year!”

With a number of repeat contenders, she has gotten to know quite a few of the “car guys and gals” and looks forward to the reunion every year.

Jeff and Judy Carlson, and Gordon and Vicki Hendrick started the Car Show in 2000, bringing a group of enthusiastic car buffs and an appreciative audience to Superior.

It was so well received that the foursome decided to make it an annual event. When Jeff was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, Judy asked the Mineral County Community Foundation to step in and help organize it.

The Hendricks organized the last two years, with 2012 as a memorial to Jeff who passed away in 2011.

At the end of last year’s car show, the Hendricks announced they needed to step away for personal reasons.

The event requires hours of volunteer work: planning, promoting, collecting prizes, and finding sponsors -- plus a fairly active weekend making sure the show runs smoothly.

The Mineral County Community Foundation members have been mentoring Schreckendgust and other volunteers to learn the ropes of putting on the event. Monte Turner, recent president of the Chamber of Commerce, invited the radio station 105.9 Jack FM to promote the show and happily they accepted.

Names of sponsors, dates and times, plus other pertinent information will be announced on the air during the run up to the show.

Last year, it was well attended with over 100 beautiful cars and everyone enjoyed nearly perfect weather. After this year, the car show will be hosted and organized by the Chamber of Commerce.

In keeping with the Founders’ original intent, the car show is a fundraising event to provide grants to a diverse array of local non-profits.

MCCF also awards scholarships to qualifying seniors, and the Car Show helps with the fundraising.

This tradition will continue, promising to bring a fun-filled weekend to the area and help support worthy causes at the same time.
