ALBERTON – The Alberton boys and girls track teams headed to Missoula April 26 to compete in the Seeley-Swan Invitational at the Missoula County Stadium.

A windy and cold day, below average temperatures may have affected the girls who only finished with a score of six on the day, which was good enough for 15th place out of the 19 teams, who competed. Plains took first with 135.

Much of the western Montana area experienced flurries and temperatures that were 20 degrees lower than they have been in recent weeks.

The boys were better in this one, finishing in sixth place with a score of 36. Bigfork took the top spot in the boy’s competition finishing the day with a 65.83.

Alberton’s Delani Hanley placed fifth in the girl’s discus competition, with a 104-9.

Ryan Vicek placed fourth in javelin with a 107-8 1/2.

On the boy’s side, Keir Sanzano placed high in four of the competitions, which has been the norm for him all season.

Sanzano tied for first in the 100-yard finish at 11.77 seconds with McKenzie Holt of Thompson Falls.

In the 300 hurdles, Sanzano represented Alberton by finishing strong although coming in second place with a 42.26 time. He finished second in discus as well with a 138-8. Andrew Lommen of Alberton was right behind him narrowly finishing at third with a 138-4.

Both Sanzano and Lommen also finished fourth and fifth in shot put, respectively. Sanzano edged Lommen out for a higher place standing with a 45-3 1/2 versus 44-3.

Alberton Track has consistently exceeded expectations this season receiving a high enough score for both the boys and girls to place in every single invite. This trend doesn’t seem to have an end as the season finale approaches. Despite challenges like up-and-down spring weather and the weekly travel, Alberton still finds a way to succeed in every invitational they are put up against.

Although the boys typically place higher than the girls, they earn a lot of their points from the discus and shot put competitions.

Look for Sanzano and Lommen to continue dicing-up the competition all the way to the end of the season where they will face the top teams and players in the conference before resting over the school’s summer break.

On May 10, Alberton heads to another Seeley-Swan hosted invitational. On May 16-17, the team will participate in the district meets at Big Sky High School. The week after, Alberton will head back to Big Sky for the divisional meet, and in a short couple of weeks will finish out the spring season on the road in Great Falls for the state meet on May 30-31.
