PLAINS - The St. Regis golf team continues to improve on the road, as each player’s stroke average continues to go down.

Despite some inclement weather, both teams were able still able to finish the entire tournament on April 26 in Plains.

“The rain didn’t slow us down,” said Dan Park, St. Regis Golf coach. “By the time we teed off the rain stopped. There were no delays. We lucked out weather wise.”

Josh Benda led the Superior squad with a final score of 82. Superior Head Coach Seth Kuhl was unavailable for comment.

Courtney Cheesman shot a 134 for the St. Regis Tigers, and Ashley Cheesman had the same.

St. Regis’ Keenan Clute improved to a 110, and Elias King matched Clute’s score as well.

Dakota Wickham had a 117, which was his best score ever, according to Park.

“All players have to shoot at least a 100 to qualify for state,” Park said. “They are all hitting the ball, but it’s the little things that can kill you.”

On May 1, St. Regis will host another home invitational, which will be hard on the players and the mandated 100 average they must have in order to go to state.

“Our course isn’t an easy one,” Park said. “But they are all hitting the ball fairly straight.”

The weather for the May 1 tournament should be significantly different as the National Weather Service is calling for temperatures at the 70 degree mark. The day should also be dry and sunny.

Park said the upcoming tournament at St. Regis will likely be the last for the season. St. Regis will skip the final two tournaments of the season at Seeley-Swan and Deer Lodge since most students are taking a school science trip to Alaska, and there are several players that are expected to go on the trip.
