SUPERIOR – The Clark Fork Valley Majors Baseball League kicked off the season April 26 in Superior.

Although Superior led the game 1-0 for most of the game, the Plains Pirates took the lead in the fourth inning and subsequently the game winning 6-1 in five innings.

Sage Brummett, starting pitcher for the Superior Rockies was solid for most of the game, giving up zero runs through the bottom of the fourth where most of the runs were allowed.

“It’s a whole new crew from last year,” said Superior Rockies Head Coach Darrin Haskins. “They came out and played their hearts out all the way to the end. We will have to work on batting, but we played good defensively.”

Superior started the game strong with a stolen home base for a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates pitching was solid as well, only allowing one earned run in five innings of play.

“I felt like it was a good battle between both teams,” said Plains Pirates Head Coach John Curry. “We were honored to play a team like Superior. We definitely have to work on base running and fielding the ball better.”

In the middle of the third inning, Brummett caught a low hit between the feet, but got the throw to first base for the out anyway. The Pirates then got a hit off towards the Rockies Miles Constant in left field to take first base. The Pirates went for a stolen base and got it putting a man on second.

Bryan Mask caught a ball hit directly to him to retire the Pirates for the inning leaving one on base.

Superior loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, however the Rockies were unable to bat any runs in, 1-0 Superior after three.

In the fourth, the Pirates recorded two outs right off the bat. The Pirates got the hit off to Brummett who would try the throw to first, going for the out to end the inning.

However, first baseman Hunter Haskins bobbled the ball for the error. The Pirates received their third out of the inning on the next hit.

The bottom of the fourth saw a lot of action as the Pirates made a big game comeback.

Superior shortstop Mask saw the ball hit to him, but he couldn’t hold on to it, but managed to get the throw to first base anyway even though the Pirates player was already safe before the ball got there.

Two hits later the Pirates loaded the bases. Plains scored in succession earning the team’s first points of the game, giving them a 2-1 lead over the Rockies.

With two bases loaded, Plains popped a ball up into the outfield to bring in three more runs, 5-1 Plains.

The Pirates put another on base, and then the next batter hit another deep ball to allow another player in for Plains, 6-1.

A series of strikeouts ended a Rockies comeback in the bottom of fifth.

Superior faces Noxon next at home May 3.
