PLAINS – A group of golf enthusiasts proved undeterred by the overcast skies on Saturday and participated in the Creekside Inn VFW Golf Tournament over the weekend.

In total seven teams, with four golfers each partook in the daylong event, which was held as a scramble/best ball tournament.

The VFW fundraiser was a nine-hole golf tournament, with participants completing one round of golf at Wild Horse Plains Golf Course before heading in for a grilled lunch, conversation and a silent auction.

Though the temperatures never got above 60 degrees during the nine-hole competition the golfers on hand did not seem to mind.

In fact, the combination of lower temperatures and overcast skies created conditions much more conducive to an enjoyable round of golf than the dry, warm weather which has come to characterize this year’s late summer in Plains.

“The weather has been great all day. It was comfortable,” Tom Jeffries, a veteran who was competing in the tournament said.

The scramble kicked off in the morning and came to a conclusion shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Jeffries was modest about his performance over the nine holes of the tournament but his teammates agreed he had played a solid round of golf on the links.

The golfer noted the course had held up well to the overnight rainfall in the region and the damp conditions throughout the day of the tournament.

“The course was great. It was wet but you could hit every pin if you wanted to,” Jeffries said.

A sudden accumulation of precipitation following dry periods can often water down golf courses and make golfing a more frustrating experience than normal.

Fortunately, the course held up to the rainfall creating an enjoyable and competitive day of golfing for the scramble’s participants.

When the competition came to a close and all golfers carts were in the cart barn, the winning group was the Cheer’s team from Ronan.

The winning team shot a total score of 31 over the nine-hole course and ended the day well ahead of the competition.

The team’s strong performance was greatly assisted by the efforts of Eli Sheridan who played a sharp round of golf, hitting some big shots for his scramble team.

Sheridan, who is from Ronan, had never played at the Plains golf course making his strong performance throughout the day of the tournament an even more impressive accomplishment.

“It was the first time I played here. I thought it was a great course,” Sheridan said.

The other members of Sheridan’s squad also played solid rounds of golf enabling the team to take home first place.

Following their winning round of golf, Sheridan stated he looked forward to returning to the course.

“I would definitely come back to play the course again,” Sheridan said.

With all of the golfer’s rounds completed Christopher Sankovic busied himself with grilling preparations as the smoker was prepared for hamburgers and other grilled treats for the hungry golfers and those who had come out to support the VFW fundraiser.
