Cop impersonator strikes in Sanders County

PLAINS – A police officer impersonator recently made himself known after he stopped a jogger and handcuffed her.

According to the Sanders County media report on July 28 at 3:16 p.m. the reporting party came into the lobby at the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office and stated she was out running on July 25 at approximately 5:15 a.m. when she was approached by an SUV. The man stated he was a deputy.

The report stated the woman said she did not feel comfortable and was not “too cooperative” because she did nothing wrong. The man then placed handcuffs on the woman.

The sheriff’s office has confirmed that they are investigating the situation, however, due to an ongoing investigation Sheriff Tom Rummel has not released anymore information.

Previous attempts to report on the situation were thwarted because of a possible lead in the case.

Sheriff Rummel did say when dealing with an officer of the law, caution should be used.

“It’s one of those things that when you are familiar with the law enforcement world, if somebody stopped and was talking to you under the power of being an officer, I would by second nature be looking at a patch, name tag, vehicle, and proper identification,” Sheriff Rummel stated.
