Lady Tigers take victory at home and defeat away

ST. REGIS – The St. Regis Lady Tigers went 1:1 last week as they faced off against the Noxon Lady Red Devils and the Arlee Lady Scarletts.

The game against Noxon opened with a slow start for the Lady Tigers as many of their shots bounced off the rim. The team’s defense also had some holes, which led to the Lady Red Devils following close behind the home team.

Senior Arianna Jones was on top of the game as she brought in at least half the quarter’s points. In one play, she made it into the open and was passed the ball. She quickly crossed the court and brought in two points. A short time later she made two baskets back-to-back for a total of four points.

The first quarter ended with a score of 16 to 10. The second quarter saw the Lady Tigers pull away and gain a stronger lead.

The rest of the half saw an improved defense where St. Regis was able to keep Noxon from getting points. Junior Gabby Moeller opened the quarter with two free throws. As play continued the girls began to gain a significant lead.

Jones continued to bring in more points as she scored two- and three-pointers. Moeller also brought in more points. The team eventually made their score double the Lady Red Devil’s. The first half ended with a score of 33 to 15.

The third quarter opened with a stronger offense from Noxon as they kept the points close. Jones continued to shine as she made a number of good plays.

After one shot bounced off, she caught the ball and took another shot, which brought in two points. She caught the ball as it dropped and passed it to junior Ashley Cheesman who shot it for three points. After a scuffle between a crowd of the teams, Cheesman gained possession of the ball again and brought in another two points.

The third quarter ended with a score 53 to 27.

The final quarter had both team’s defenses rally to where neither side had much of an advantage. Both sides only took in a handful of points.

The Lady Tigers kept up a strong offense and made good passes throughout the quarter. While they only brought in six points, the girls took the game with a final score of 59 to 32.

Jones was the best scorer of the game as she scored 16 points. Freshman Pilar Cantrell-Field was just behind her with 13 points.

In their game against Arlee on Friday, January 31, St. Regis faced a defeat with a final score of 50 to 66. The game was close throughout and both teams had a strong fight.

The first half had no clear advantage as both teams gained almost identical points. While the Lady Tigers came out the first quarter with a lead of 20 to 18, the second quarter saw Arlee pull slightly ahead for a score of 34 to 36 at the end of the first half.

The second half saw Arlee gain a big advantage as their defense kept the St. Regis girls behind. However, the Lady Tigers were still able to keep the scores close and brought in half the points the Lady Scarletts did in the fourth quarter.

Jones and Cantrell-Field continued to shine in the game as each player scored 12 points.

Next week the team will play two more home games. On Thursday, February 6, the girls play against Two Eagle River and on Saturday, February 8, the Lady Tigers play against Darby.
