Tigers struggle through week of Warriors and Devils

ST. REGIS – The St. Regis Tigers took two defeats in their games last week when they played against the Noxon Red Devils and the Arlee Warriors.
When they played against Noxon on Tuesday, January 28, the Tigers were defeated by 30 points.
The Tigers began the game slowly as they had trouble making baskets. A number of shots either flew over the net or bounced off the rim. Even after the difficulties, they were able to score the first points of the game.
Freshman Trevor Lowry was one of the top shooters for the quarter and got the ball a number of times. In one play he was fouled by a Noxon player and got two free throws. Both shots rebounded into the crowd of players and the ball was passed around until it made it back to Lowry. His next shot bounced off and he scored one free throw.
The first quarter went slow for St. Regis and ended with a score of 6 to 18. The second quarter was better for the team as both offense and defense improved.
The guys were able to bring in more points through the rest of the first half and kept the Red Devils to only a few points. The half ended with a score of 16 to 29.
There were many good plays through the quarter. Early in the game junior Dakota Wickham took a shot, which bounced off the rim. The rebound was caught by Lowry, who bumped it into the basket to score two points.
The second half opened in a stalemate as both teams pushed back the other’s offense. Wickham was the top scorer for the third quarter as he scored a number of points to pull in closer to Noxon. The quarter ended with an 11-point gap and a score of 25 to 36.
The final quarter saw the Red Devils pull ahead and gain a strong advantage against the Tigers. Noxon’s defense took a huge leap as they kept St. Regis to a single point in the quarter.
While the Tigers took a number of shots, they continually bounced off the rim. A single penalty shot by Wickham was able to make it in, bringing the final score to 26 to 56.
When they played against Arlee the Tigers had a better game but took a second defeat with a final score of 40 to 71.
The first half saw St. Regis struggle against the Warrior’s guards and only bring in a handful of points each quarter. The Tigers also had problems blocking Arlee as the opposition brought in over 20 points in the first quarter. The half closed with a score of 13 to 40.
After the break at the half the Tigers were able to score more points while reducing those of the Warriors. Both quarters saw the Tigers play an improved offensive game as they fought back.
Wickham was the top scorer for the Tigers with 12 points. Lowry was right behind as he scored 11 points and his brother junior Gibson Lowry brought in 10.
St. Regis will play another set of home games next week. The first game will be on Thursday, February 6, against Two Eagle River. The second game will be played on Saturday, February 8, against Darby.
