Trotters find their stride in game against Eureka

PLAINS – The Trotters had a challenging weekend of games. They traveled with the Horsemen to Eureka in order to compete against the Lions. The night before, they were faced with the daunting task of taking on the No. 2 ranked team in the state, Deer Lodge.

The Trotters were greeted by a full house as they took to their home court Friday night. The crowd was eagerly waiting to see how the No. 7 Trotters would match up against the Deer Lodge Wardens.

The Trotters kept up with the Wardens at the start of the game. They were only down by one point at the end of the first quarter. The halftime score was 9-13 and the Plains girls kept their heads held high.

Deer Lodge played very tough defensively. This caused 26 turnovers by the Trotters which limited their available shots.

In the third quarter, the Wardens outscored the Trotters 14-5. Plains trailed behind by three points in the fourth quarter which made the final score 16-31.

Although the loss might be tough to swallow, the Trotters fought hard against the top-ranked team in the nonconference game.

Hailey Phillips led the team with six points and Carly VonHeeder followed with four points. Kimberly Earhart, Sami Kinzie and Kayla Holmes each contributed two points.

Despite the loss of the previous night, the Trotters came out ready to win Saturday against the Eureka Lions.

Plains was down by a single point yet again after the first quarter but they fought back and managed to outscore the Lions by five points in the second quarter. The score going into the half was 23-19.

The third quarter was when the Trotters really found their stride and outscored Eureka 17-6. They held the lead through the fourth quarter and the final score was 50-29.

Holmes was the lead scorer that night with 15 points. She was followed closely by Earhart who had 14 points.

Going into this week’s games, the Trotters have a 7-0 conference record and a record of 11-3 overall. They will compete against two county rivals. Thursday they will face-off against the Lady Hawks of Thompson Falls and Saturday they will meet the Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat at home.
