Alberton girls take on Eagles
ALBERTON – As the Lady Panthers faced off against Drummond at home, they struggled against the Lady Trojan’s defense and ended in a loss.
The Lady Trojans took a strong lead early in the game and were able to keep the home team from scoring. As Alberton warmed up, the team struggled to bring in points. The first quarter ended with an unopposed score of 24 points for Drummond.
While their offense took some time to get going, the Alberton girls moved the ball well.
In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers got into the game as they started to bring in points. While many shots bounced off the rim and backboard, the team’s game improved and the girls were able to make some good plays.
After one of the Lady Trojans took a shot, senior Ryan Vicek caught the rebound. She got the ball to freshman Rebecca Pluth who was able to make the basket and put the team on the board.
The first half ended with a score of 5 to 32.
In the second half, the Lady Trojans brought an improved defense to the court as they almost had a repeat of the first quarter. After a struggle against the opposition, the Alberton girls were able to make use of a foul and allow sophomore Deveyn Dutt to make one point. The third quarter ended with a score of 6 to 48.
In the final quarter, the Lady Panthers came back strong as they halted Drummond’s advance. The Lady Trojans only got one more point than Alberton.
During one play, the ball almost went out-of-bounds before one of the Alberton girls saved it. She passed it to junior Taylor Erdman who dropped the ball, but quickly retrieved it and fell to the ground as she passed it to Vicek. When Vicek went to shoot the ball, it bounced off the backboard.
The rebound was caught by Erdman who passed it to eighth grader Montanna Baughman. The ball was passed to senior Hailie Bahm to bring in another two points.
The final score was 9 to 52.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, the girls had a better game when they played against the Victor Lady Pirates. While the game still resulted in a loss, the gap in points was not as severe.
Victor did not get a significant lead until the second quarter. With a score of 2-9, neither team had a decisive advantage.
The second quarter saw the Lady Pirates take off in their plays and quickly gain the lead. While the Lady Panthers struggled against Victor’s guards, they were able to increase their own points. The end of the first half ended with a score of 9 to 30.
The third quarter saw the girls falter under the pressure of Victor’s defense and only brought in two points.
As the game continued, the fourth quarter saw the team rally and bring stronger plays. The Lady Panthers were able to push their opposition back and keep the quarter’s points low.
The final score was 20 to 52.
Vicek led the team’s efforts as she brought in nine points. Senior Rebecca Braae came in as the second highest scorer with four.
The girls played a third game on Monday, Feb. 10, against Drummond. This was a make-up game after a previous match was cancelled due to weather.
This game also resulted in a loss where the girls were unable to make more than a handful of points each quarter.
In the first quarter, the girls ran into problems overcoming the Drummond defense to reach the net. The quarter saw the Lady Panthers behind by 15 points.
The second quarter had the Alberton girls fall even farther behind. The Lady Trojans were able to keep their opponents from scoring any points. The first half ended with a score of 3 to 28.
As the second half progressed, the Lady Panthers continued to have problems pushing through the Drummond defense. The team was able to push through and improve their standing. Over the course of the half, the team brought home eight points. The game ended with a final score of 11 to 53.
Vicek continued to lead the team, bringing in nine points. Senior Haley Marvin was the other main contributor as she took two points.
The Lady Panther’s next game will be this week at home.
The team will play against Valley Christian on Thursday, Feb. 13. They will also travel to Darby on Saturday, Feb. 15, for their last game of the regular season.
