St. Regis goes against Eagles and Tigers

ST. REGIS – The Tigers fought a hard battle during the game against Two Eagle River on Thursday.

The game was close and St. Regis began with a lead. The first half ended with a score of 31 to 26. The second half saw a turnaround in the game’s fortunes.

While the game was still close, the Eagles were able to keep the St. Regis offense down. The game ended with a final score of 48 to 50.

Junior Dakota Wickham was the star player of the game when he brought 18 points to St. Regis. Eighth-grader Brandon Managhan also played well with a contribution of 10 points.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the guys played another game against the Darby Tigers. The boys had their second defeat as the opposition’s tactics overwhelmed the St. Regis players.

Darby was able to take an advantage early and began to pull ahead. The guys struggled to make their baskets around the other team’s defense; however, some of the St. Regis players had a great quarter.

Freshman Trevor Lowry was responsible for almost all of the points to St. Regis in the first quarter. He was able to make a number of baskets and one three-pointer at the buzzer. The quarter ended with a score of 9 to 16.

In the second quarter, Darby put on the pressure to keep the home team from the basket. They were able to bring in a number of points while keeping the St. Regis players from getting the ball. In the end, senior Keenan Clute was able to break through to score two points. This made the score at the half 11 to 31.

As the players came back after halftime, St. Regis was pumped up. Their game received a huge boost and they began to bring in more points. While Darby still had the lead, the game looked much closer.

Clute was one of the big scorers of the quarter as was Wickham. The team more than doubled their points in the quarter and brought their total up to 23. As the quarter progressed, there were a number of nice moves from the St. Regis players.

During one play, a Darby player drove the ball down the court and tried to overcome the home team’s guards. As he brushed past junior Gibson Lowry, he lost the ball against the 6’3” player but continued on for several feet before he realized it. Gibson was then able to scoop up the ball without needing to move.

The final quarter saw the team stage a major comeback. Gibson and Wickham were major powerhouses in the quarter as they brought in point after point. The team was then able to come from behind and seriously threaten Darby’s lead.

The final score of the game was 40 to 65.

Trevor was easily the top player of the St. Regis team as he brought in 15 points. Wickham was the second highest with 12.

The Tigers played another game in Noxon on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The outcome of this game was not available at the time of press.

The team will play in Superior on Thursday, Feb. 13.
