Superintendent makes resignation agreement
ST. REGIS – The St. Regis Schools ended up without leadership last week as Janet Hanson officially stepped down as superintendent of the school.
According to Elizabeth Kaleva, attorney for the St. Regis School’s Board of Directors, the board entered into a resignation agreement with Hanson. While she will no longer act as superintendent, her resignation will be effective June 30.
Kaleva said Hanson came to the board to request the agreement for personal and professional reasons. The board considered the request and voted to approve it.
While Hanson is officially no longer superintendent, her contract does not expire until the end of the school year.
“We have to honor her contract, and [it] runs until June 30, 2014,” said Kaleva. “But she will no longer be performing any duties on behalf of the school district.”
The board has hired an interim superintendent to stand in for Hanson. Peggy Anderson, a former superintendent in Frenchtown, has stepped into the position in the mean time. She will work with the board and keep the school running until the end of the school year.
They have also begun a search for a new full-time superintendent for the 2014-2015 school year. When the board finds someone, the new superintendent will be unable to start until July 1. Because everyone is still under contracts the board cannot enter into a new agreement until the others expire. However, the possibility does exist for a new superintendent to start mid-year.
“If they found someone right now who’s willing to come on full-time, they could certainly discuss it,” said Kaleva. “But that’s really rare.”
