Noxon plays their strongest game of the season
NOXON – The Lady Red Devils played one of their strongest games of the season against Two Eagle River in hopes of continuing into the district tournament.
Noxon outscored Two Eagle in the first quarter by three points. This was just the beginning of a great first half. As the second quarter began, the ladies blew through the competition and put up 16 points on the scoreboard compared to their opponent’s six points.
As the ladies advanced into the third quarter, they remained in the lead. Putting up another seven points on the scoreboard, they led by nine points at the end of the quarter.
Their streak of success went into the fourth quarter but the team lost the lead in the last four minutes of the game.
Throughout the game, the girls got into foul trouble, losing two of their girls for the remainder of the game. Head Coach Ashleigh Singbeil said Two Eagle River shut Noxon off offensively.
“We couldn’t compete defensively,” Coach Singbeil said.
The game ended with a final score of 34-45. The loss hit the girls hard. It looked like Noxon had the win in the bag but in the end, they were unable to seal the deal.
“They wanted it really bad but it just wasn’t happening,” Coach Singbeil said.
Asiah Jensen gave her best performance of the season. Coach Singbeil said she stepped up and filled her role – something she had been working toward all season long. Jensen put up 11 points in the game.
Kristin Webley also played tough bringing in ten points as well as good defensive plays and steals.
As Coach Singbeil looked back at the season, the biggest thing she noticed from start to finish was the amount of growth the girls experienced.
“We started with not a lot and we had a lot of work ahead of us. The whole year they worked hard and never gave up,” Coach Singbeil said. “(The loss) was tough on them but they learned a lot and are more prepared for what’s to come in the future.”
The young team of girls gained experience and learned the fundamentals needed to play a more competitive game.
“They’re really starting to understand the game and how to play at the next level,” Coach Singbeil said.
The skill will prove invaluable as the girls look towards next year. The ladies will have the experience they need to bring a stronger front to the court.
Coach Singbeil plans to be there to see their improvement and will continue coaching.
