Lady Bobcats claw their way to victory

The Superior girls basketball team faced off against Alberton and Arlee over the weekend

SUPERIOR – The Lady Bobcats defeated their county rivals from Alberton on their home court Tuesday, January 21, as the two teams went head to head for the second time this season.

Superior took the game with a final score of 55 to 38. A strong third quarter led the Superior girls to victory in an otherwise close game.

The victory of the Lady Bobcats was a team effort and everyone contributed. Both teams played a strong game and had players who played especially well. Superior junior Jordan Mueller led the Lady Bobcats as she scored 21 points. She was followed by sophomore Marissa Koke as she took 13 points.

Superior also played a home game against the Arlee Lady Savages on Friday, January 24. The Lady Bobcats saw a final score of 40 to 63 Arlee.

Sophomore Danielle Ewoniuk led Superior with 19 points. She played a strong game and was one of the top shooters of the game. Ewoniuk got a number of penalty shots throughout the first quarter.

The Lady Savages gained a strong lead as both teams presented a strong offense and defense. The game started close, but Arlee was able to gain a stronger lead in the final minute of the quarter. The quarter ended with a score of 6 to 14.

In the second quarter, Arlee began to pull further ahead. Everyone on the team helped with scoring. Senior Michele Smith took two shots, which bounced off the rim. On one of them Mueller caught the rebound tried for another shot. The ball passed around the crowd until it managed to get back to Smith.

As the quarter continued, the Arlee girls became more and more aggressive. Their lead continued to grow and many of their shots were nothing but net. The end of the first half saw a score of 11 to 33.

The coach felt the girls were a little intimidated by Arlee in the first half. He felt the team could do anything if they came out aggressive from the start and played as strong as they did in the second half.

“We come out timid and we’re like ‘oh no they’re Arlee’ or whoever and we don’t come out and play,” said Schultz. “Then the second half, we realize ‘oh, we can play’ and we came out and did so much better.”

The third quarter saw the Lady Bobcats begin to recover. A number of their shots went right in the basket.

Early on Smith and Mueller worked to steal the ball and take a shot. Mueller and Ewoniuk continued to shoot for scores throughout the period. The second half saw a much stronger game for Superior as the team brought in more points than the first half.

As the clock ticked to zero Smith took a long three-point shot, but it did not make it in. The game saw a final score of 22-48.

The final quarter saw a much fiercer game. Both teams played a very aggressive game and many players hit the floor as things got more physical. There was a complicated dance of passes between the players.

Schultz said the girls were much more aggressive in the second half. He said

Mueller brought in two three-point shots. She also made a nice run-by steal from Arlee, which led to a two-point score. The final points were small penalty shots as both sides tried to pull in as many points as they could.

The game’s final score saw a Superior loss of 40 to 63.

Mueller came in behind Ewoniuk as the second best scorer with 10 points. The rest of the Lady Bobcat’s points were brought in by everyone on the team.

The Lady Bobcats will play two home games this week. Their first game will be on Thursday, January 30, against Thompson Falls. There will be another game on Friday, January 31, against Hot Springs.
