Wrestlers surpass previous success rates

NOXON – Some say rest is beneficial to success. If that’s the case, the Red Devils are taking the right course of action. Noxon will ease back into competition with only one mixer to attend this week.

The Red Devils will be back at Plains for another night of important wrestling. The matches will help determine the seed order for divisionals.

Although they may be light on mat time, they are not taking practice lightly.

“I want some one on one time,” Head Coach Ben Ulrick said.

The wrestlers remain pumped up for the season and everyone has a good attitude as they continue into what little time is left to compete before the divisional tournament.

With only five wrestlers, the coach has a great opportunity to work with each kid individually and cater his time to focus on whatever that particular wrestler needs to improve on.

Last week the wrestlers went to Plains and Mission to get as many matches as they could. During the Plains Mixer on last Friday, the night overall went well.

“I was really pleased that night,” Coach Ulrick said.

Luke Crowe had a big win over a kid from Ronan but later lost in an upset against Kane Lawson from the Savage Horsemen.

Although Coach Ulrick said Lawson was a tough wrestler, Crowe hoped for a different outcome.

During the tournament in Mission, a few wrestlers stood out. Alan Chojnacky had a good day and beat a kid he lost to earlier this season.

“He’s come a long way,” Coach Ulrick said.

John Onofrey won at 220 pounds, while Kory Neal went 4-0 at 145 pounds and won his bracket.

So far the wrestling team is just over 500 – something that hasn’t been accomplished in the last couple years.

“We’re winning over half our matches. That’s pretty good for us,” Coach Ulrick said. “You always want to do better but that’s the best we’ve done in the last several years.”

As their success continues, their eyes are set at the divisional competition on February 8.
