THOMPSON FALLS– The Fort on Cedar Street was bustling throughout the day on Saturday, June 21 with shoppers searching for bargains and delicious baked goods.

Starting bright and early in the morning and running through the afternoon to around 3 p.m., volunteers with Sanders County Relay For Life were busy running the combined yard and bake sale.

The event was held by the (Frame to Finish) county Relay For Life team.

The Saturday event marked the second year the team held a combined yard sale, debuting the event at The Fort last year.

“It has been an awesome day for us,” Rhonda Flemmer, a team member said.

Flemmer noted it was a complete team effort to get the event off and the facility hosting the sale had proved a useful space for both years of the sale.

“We have 19 members on the team and they all contributed,” Flemmer said.

Though the event took place on Saturday, team members were out in force on Friday night, helping to set up for the weekend event.

There was a wide variety of items on sale during the yard sale.

A selection of furniture lined the parking lot, though the number of pieces available had dropped substantially by the early afternoon, with morning shoppers taking their pick of the selection.

Additionally, inside an array of treasures could be found.

All manners of clothing, including hats were on display, in addition to a selection of VHS movies, DVDs, compact discs and computer games, which were also on sale at discount prices.

There was also a collection of appliances, electronics and interesting knick knacks to be found by those out and about in downtown Thompson Falls on the first official day of summer.

The combined yard and bake sale is one of four events held throughout the year in order to support Relay For Life.

Other benefits include a Christmas event and a Pampered Chef themed party to support the local chapter of the national organization.

The pleasant weather didn’t hurt the volunteers as a good crowd purchased a variety of items from the (Frame to Finish) team.

“All proceeds go towards supporting Relay For Life in the county,” Flemmer said.

Fellow team members Shelly Borden and Debbie Burwig joined Flemmer at The Fort during the afternoon portion of the event.

The assembled team members noted funds raised by the event were used to support local cancer patients, covering a wide variety of expenses from gas, medical costs, lodging, wigs and make-up for patients.

For those with a sweet tooth, fresh baked cookies were on hand. The baked goods were made by some of the team members in preparation for the event.

The big summer event for teams throughout the county is the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which will be held at Thompson Falls High School in the evening of Friday, August 1.
