Superior summer basketball winds down season

SUPERIOR - The Superior boys summer basketball coach Chris Toivonen has been getting some solid performances from his team in the last few weeks.

At a recent tournament in Frenchtown, the team went four and one beating Loyola, Seeley-Swan, Florence and Frenchtown and recently won a contest against Plains with a score of 56 to 34. Toivonen said his team has been especially effective on defense. The coach singled out several players he said put in outstanding performances.

“Vincente Guerrero was really a stand out,” Toivonen said. “He was five for nine in one game and was a great passer for us.”

Another player who had a solid defensive performance was Aaron Kelly who worked the boards pulling multiple rebounds for the team. Toivonen said one of his players shot perfectly in one game from downtown.

“Josh Benda did a real nice job shooting the basket,” Toivonen said. “He was three for three from the three point line.”

On offense, two more players put up critical points for the team according to Toivonen. The coach said Wyatt Zylawy and Howard Johnson made baskets when it counted.

“Wyatt had a huge game for us last Saturday,” Toivonen said. “He really lifted the team. Howard scored 14 points for us last Friday. His rebounding and defense was also outstanding.”

A veteran player and a newcomer also came through for the team at their last tournament. Antonio Avila has been with the team for several seasons and Bryan Mask was playing his first season of competitive ball for Superior. Toivonen said Mask, who is only a sixth grader, was already making an impact.

“He handled the ball well,” Toivonen said. “He plays like a high school player, just smaller. Antonio did a nice job with his weak-side rebounding and executed well. He’s a veteran player that really stood out.”

Toivonen said the remaining schedule for the rest of the year was yet to be determined.
