Yard sale kicks off summer

ST. REGIS – Even though the spring flea market is over, St. Regis once again tried to attract shoppers to the area with another annual sale.

There were at least 11 houses that participated in the annual yard sale event all over St. Regis, said Eileen Wolfe, event coordinator.

“I have been doing this seven years, so the annual sale has been going on way before my time,” Wolfe said.

The June 6 event is the single biggest yard sale event in the area during summer. Neighbors come together to ensure a one-stop shopping area for all yard-salers.

People invited passing cars into their yards, attracting attention by placing signs at the St. Regis Travel Center, directing them down Little Joe Road, and down parts of US-135.

The tour took those by the St. Regis Campground, toward Camel’s Hump and back around by the St. Regis School.

Homeowners filled tables of clothes, jewelry, furniture and other unwanted merchandise that no longer held any meaning.

A massage table, wood stove, baby stuff, and a seven-foot ornamental wood mill were also available, according to Wolfe.

Wolfe said the yard sale wasn’t intentionally scheduled for the same day as the Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show in Superior. Although she didn’t seem too concerned about being double booked.

“We try to schedule things on other days, but this year we didn’t succeed,” Wolfe said.

The demand for the event is there as Wolfe reported she went through nearly 100 maps and lists while preparing for the sale.

People wishing to shop and participate in the sale were greeted by homeowners.

The community center also served free coffee during the event.

The weather held out for the yard sale, which would have been canceled and not rescheduled if it rained.

The last couple of weeks have arguably been highly successful for Mineral County. The flea market in St. Regis attracted thousands of travelers from all over the region for the weekend.

The car show brought much of the same growth as nearly 100 classic car owners came from the east side of the state, and from as far away as Washington. And then there’s the yard sale, which potentially pulled in cars off the highway en route to the car show.

It will be hard to top these successful events for the rest of the summer, yet there are still many more activities planned by the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce.

There is one more St. Regis sale to round out the summer. A ‘fall’ flea market will be held in August to bring one more economic push before the cold, fall air moves in, the snowflakes start to fly, and the seasonal tourist traffic on I-90 withers away.
