PLAINS – Gardeners flocked to the Plains Community Garden on Monday, June 2 for a kick-off to the season.

Those in attendance shared plants, seeds, ideas and tidbits about gardening. A drawing was also hosted for a handful of prizes.

“We had a great time at the plant swap,” member Glenda Wolverton said.

This year there are no major changes however, the garden will be looking forward to some changes that will take place next year.

With the help from a “tremendous donation” from a local grower, the crew is busy preparing to get everything donated into the ground.

The garden located on 5th Street and Second Avenue behind the Plains Alliance Church provides 9’x12’ plots to members of the community.

The plots include a drip line for watering and also have a deer fence to keep animals away from the crops. Along with that, several workshops are offered during each season.

“Examples of these workshops include a seed starting, hands on workshop in the spring and a plant and seed exchange/share usually the first week of June,” Wolverton said. “Canning and/or preserving workshops may be offered in the fall and there is plenty of help and advice available for beginners from putting a garden in to when and what to do with the harvest.”

Wolverton said the garden provides a great opportunity to share ideas, learn new techniques for maximizing your harvest and also provides a great environment to make new friends.

“We encourage gardeners to share their harvest with the food bank as well as their friends, family and neighbors. It is always interesting to find new varieties of old favorites that we may not have tried before,” Wolverton said.

This is the third year of the garden, which has had a great amount of community support from local businesses and individuals.

“We anticipate a very successful growing season this year and welcome new gardener to join us,” Wolverton said.
