Theft occurs at Plains Cemetery

| June 13, 2014 1:11 PM

PLAINS – Fifty to sixty Memorial Day decorations were taken from the Plains Cemetery on the evening of Monday, June 2.

According to Sexton Ken Jones, the decorations were lined up and labeled ready for different families in the area to retrieve their momentums of affection left for those that had passed before them.

Along with the decorations, flags belonging to the VFW were also taken.

“It’s just really sad,” Jones said. “What a terrible thing as a sidebar to someone just probably thinking they are petty pilfering, you’re not.”

The arrangements typically range from $20-25, said Jones. The ones that were taken were reusable decorations often times used for numerous years.

The decorations lined a stone wall and were removed because the cemetery requires all Memorial Day decorations to be taken down on June 2. The decorations were removed and organized by Jones so that families who were not able to take down the decorations were able to come by and pick them up.

The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of the theft, however, dispatch was unable to find an incident report on the particular theft. Sheriff Tom Rummel did not return phone calls.
