Alberton Principal named to Hall of Fame

ALBERTON – Kyle Fisher, principal of the Alberton Public Schools, will live out the dream of every athlete as he is inducted into the Montana State University Northern Athletic Hall of Fame.

The recognition will come as the result of his accomplishments as a wrestler at MSU Northern. Fisher pursued his wrestling career throughout college and achieved an All-American title as well as top scores all four years. In his senior year, he became national champion at the same time the team as a whole won the championship.

A person’s accomplishments are very important to whether they make it into the Hall of Fame. The selection committee looks at what the inductees have accomplished with their degree as well as their sports career. Fisher felt becoming principal at Alberton was what earned him his place in the Hall of Fame. He was also a coach for several years after college, and a teacher for eight, before becoming principal.

“Definitely something that was unexpected, but something that was pretty neat,” Fisher said. “Being inducted is quite an honor.”

Fisher learned he would be immortalized in the Hall of Fame on Wednesday, March 5. Since then he has been flooded with calls from friends, family and teammates telling him how excited they were.

A strict criterion is followed for who makes the cut. The MSU Northern website said the Hall of Fame inducts people who have been out of the college for at least 10 years. They had to have graduated from an accredited four-year college with two years at MSU Northern. Potential Hall of Famers must also have gained recognition in a sport and have high moral character.

“The Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes players, managers and coaches who have made outstanding contributions to athletics,” the MSU Northern website stated.

Fisher needed to be nominated for consideration. The information about his accomplishments was sent to a selection committee. This included a list of his honors, awards, professional accomplishments, a brief biography and letters of support from college officials.

According to Fisher, one of his old teammates and his college coach were responsible for nominating him as an inductee. His coach has another role to play with a special job in the ceremony. Fisher’s old coach will be the one to give a speech and introduce him at the ceremony.

The ceremony will be held on Friday, May 2, the day before the college’s spring graduation ceremony. The induction ceremony will include a celebratory dinner for the officials, alumni and their families. Fisher will receive an award and be included on the Hall of Fame display in the MSU Northern gym.

Everything is still sinking in but Fisher is very excited to be receiving this honor. He said he is grateful to his former teammates, family, the community as well as everyone else who has supported him through wrestling and his life.

“I’m very excited and appreciative for being thought of for the induction,” Fisher said.

He hopes his story will have an impact on the kids in the community. He wants to inspire the students at the Mineral County schools to reach for their potential and not give up on their dreams.

“Anything is possible, anything is achievable for them,” Fisher said.
