Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge recognized

SANDERS COUNTY – The Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge recently received a trophy from the State Veterans Committee in honor of their support and service of local veterans. The award is a representation of recognition from the Montana State Elks Association.
The lodge of Sanders County has a long and proud history of assisting veterans. The members provide a home for the local American Legion Post #52. The lodge hosts numerous events and dinners for veterans including the free Veteran’s Day Dinner. They also work to obtain grants meant to aide in the Sanders County Transportation vehicles.
A profound example of the fine work Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge does is the case of Mickey Herndon.
Herndon was a veteran who had lost one of his legs and suffered a stroke. His beloved wife, Lea, could not bear the thought of putting him in a nursing home. She wanted to be able to keep him home with her but she needed help to make it possible.
According to Exalted Ruler Donna Damaskos, members of the lodge were eager to help. They worked to build a ramp and add a roof for overhead protection. A lift chair was even donated to the cause, all so Lea could take care of her husband.
Instances like this one, where the Elks can step in and help to make someone else’s life better, is what really makes Damaskos proud.
“They all chipped in and did a perfect job. Their work was beautiful,” she said. “It makes my heart warm.”
The Elks make many contributions to support the local veterans but it was their impact on the Sanders County Tri-State Stand Down for which they earned the attention of the State Veteran’s Committee.
Damaskos said the recognition is in large part thanks to the efforts of Elks member Billy Hill. He worked hundreds of hours and donated money out of his own pocket in order to ensure success for the Stand Down.
Connie Scott, Elks member, said that 2,257 veterans and their family members received assistance from the most recent Sanders County Tri-State Stand Down either in the form of merchandise, benefit claims or both. This sets it as the most successful Stand Down in the entire country.
The new term for the Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge will begin on April 15 and the recently elected officers will take over. They are eager to continue serving the veterans of Sanders County.
The Clark Fork Valley Elks Lodge will have a St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 17 at the lodge in Thompson Falls. “It is an honor to reach out to a lot of good people who need help,” Damaskos said.
