Vendors pass compliance checks

| March 12, 2014 11:59 AM

SANDERS COUNTY- On Friday, March 7, members of the Sanders County Alcohol Enforcement Team conducted Alcohol Compliance Checks to determine if local establishments would serve alcohol to minors. All of the businesses checked passed the compliance check - the employee asked for valid ID, verified the age of the buyer was under 21 and refused the sale or service of alcohol to the minor.

When asked, the minors involved in the compliance checks were instructed to show their own valid Montana driver’s license, which clearly shows their birth date and confirms that they are under the age of 21. There was no attempt to deceive the servers/sellers.

As of October 1, 2011, Montana Law requires owners, managers and servers of alcohol to attend Responsible Alcohol Sales and Server (RASS) training within sixty days of hire. Montana Law prohibits the sale of alcohol to minors and to those that are obviously intoxicated.  RASS classes provide the training needed to understand the Law, and to recognize and refuse the sale of alcohol to minors and to obviously intoxicated individuals.

In addition to parental and community intervention, increased media attention and education, RASS training and enforcement efforts including Compliance Checks are essential to the success of ongoing environmental prevention efforts aimed at reducing rates of underage drinking and alcohol-related crashes in Sanders County.

“With the combined effort of the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office, local police departments, the DUI Task Force as well as the Elevate Coalition, we were pleased to see that all establishments passed compliance checks,” Sheriff Tom Rummel said.  “It’s obvious that local businesses are treating alcohol sales to minors seriously. Keep up the good work and keep checking those IDs.”
