Noxon kids enhance their love for reading
NOXON - Noxon Elementary school showed their enthusiasm for reading during the I Love to Read month celebration in February.
“We are so proud of all of our students and their reading success,” Fourth Grade teacher Maret Philpott said. The school celebrated reading each week with different activities. First, the students shared books by “Reading with the Stars.” During this event, high school and junior high students came together with the elementary students and read with the younger kids. According to Philpott, the halls and classrooms were abuzz with the sounds of reading students
“I was awesome to see their excitement,” Philpott said.
Next, the school listened to Amy Piazzola, a former Noxon first grade teacher. Piazzola shared her latest book publication, “Ten, Nineteen, and In-Between.” She used her picture book to teach younger readers numbers 10-19 using her picture book and teaching methods. She also discussed publishing opportunities with the older students. Philpott said the students enjoyed reading her book.
Books were donated by the Noxon PTO and Reading is Fundamental. According to Philpott, each year the PTO donates books to each student.
On Wednesday, February 19 the school celebrated their 100th school day by lining the halls with their favorite books. Each elementary classroom voted on their favorite one to read and decorated the doorway in honor. As a culmination of the event, students dressed up as their favorite book character to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. From the “Cat in the Hat” to “Thing One” and “Thing Two,” Noxon School students and teachers took part in reading and learning.
As each student read 20 minutes daily during the month, they were given a chance to win a bicycle or a kindle e-reader, donated by the Masonic Lodge #70. Cal Dunks of the Thompson Falls Masonic Lodge presented the honors to second grader Nick Tessier who won a bicycle and Vanessa Horner, a fourth grader, winner of the Kindle e-reader.
“Thanks to the Thompson Falls Masonic Lodge for their generous donation and support of our reading program.” Philpott said. She also congratulated the winners, giving special attention to the ultimate winners - all the readers at Noxon School.
