| March 26, 2014 6:53 PM

Longtime Superior resident Dan Toomey, 90, passed away peacefully at Mineral Community Hospital in Superior on March 15, 2014. His death was caused, as he would say, “from tearing too many pages off the calendar.”

He was born on April 17, 1923, in St. Leo’s Hospital in Lewistown, Montana. His parents were Anna Teresa (Wichman) Toomey and Thomas Francis Toomey. He married Betty Jane Ellis at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Lewistown on August 9, 1944.

He was a Pharmacist’s Mate 1st Class in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 during WWII. He participated in many landings including North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, Italy, and Normandy. For these actions, he was awarded five Bronze Stars.

He and Betty moved to Superior in 1948. He apprenticed as a carpenter with Jack Plank and together they built the back bar of the 4-Aces Bar. He later helped build and worked for Diamond Match Company (Diamond International). In 1955, he and Betty purchased the 4-Aces Bar and operated it until 1962. During that time Superior didn’t have a bank, so they cashed many of the local payroll checks. He was instrumental in helping to form a bank and served on the board. He later worked for the U.S. Forest Service, Mineral County Road Crew, Superior School District, and Diamond International until his retirement in 1985. He performed maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. He also advised, loaned tools, or helped many Superior residents with their construction and remodeling projects over the years.

He was an active member of VFW Post 6238.  He served as Commander and was recognized as All-State Commander in 1990. He was on the Superior Cemetery Board from 2002-2014. He retired from the Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty, his parents, brothers: Tom, Jack, and Gene; sisters; Mary, Katsy, and Teresa. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Worden, his brother, Paul of Minneapolis, son, Butch, daughter, LoAnna Savage (Lloyd), grandchildren: Lisa Schwartzman (David), Angie Hopwood (Hugh), Ryan Savage,(Cortney) Jordan Savage, (Alexis) and Cameron Savage. His great grandchildren are Tiffany Schwartzman, Ashley Schwartzman, JohnPaul Savage, Emma Hopwood, Jace Boskofsky, Jaydyn Savage, Anika Hopwood, and Linaya Savage. His great-great grandchildren are Makenna Spencer-Schwartzman, Addison Schwartzman, Dawson Parmiter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was loved dearly, and was well-known for his friendly wave when Dan and Mary Ann made their daily cruises around Superior.

At his request, no services will be held.
