SUPERIOR – The Superior Rockies earned their first win of the season beating the Noxon Diamondbacks 9-7 on May 3. This one was close as both teams battled to the bitter end; however, Superior took it at the finale batting in multiple runners.

The rain held off, but it’s the second week in a row both teams had to compete in breezy conditions and cooler temperatures.

In the third inning, Superior robbed Noxon even though they stole second base, but the Rockies waited for the ball in centerfield to end the series.

Superior’s Bryan Mask led off in the middle of the third. He took ball four and was awarded first base.

Nick Day would follow-up with a base hit. Sage Brummett and Danner Haskins struck out to give the Diamondbacks the bat.

Bryan returned to the mound for Superior in the bottom of the third, quickly striking out three Noxon players who also left three runners on base.

At the top of the fourth, the Rockies would try to put a dagger in Noxon, and arguably made a statement to do so. Thadus Haskins struck out early, and the next batter would pop out to centerfield. However, Jake Calloway hit a double, and eventually scored for Superior. Then, Hunter Haskins singled, and when that wasn’t enough, stole second base on the next chance he got.

Superior started to whittle down the Diamondbacks pitcher after Bryan took ball four, and then first base. Although the Rockies were in a prime position, Nick Day hit to Noxon’s second baseman getting the out to return the team to defense mode.

The Diamondbacks attempted their comeback in the middle of the fourth after batting a single to centerfield, which turned into a stolen third base on the next hit. However, the next batter for Noxon would strike out, and after that a pop fly was hit to Thadus Haskins in the outfield for the out, and then quickly tagged a runner out at second to end the series.

Superior attempted another resurgence in the bottom of the fourth. Hewston Coon singled and stole second base after the Noxon catcher dropped the ball behind the plate.

Next up, Sage Brummett who struck out. Danner Haskins kept the momentum up though hit a single, allowing Coon to advance to third.

On the next hit for Superior, Danner Haskins snuck to second for the steal. However, Thadus would strike out, as would the next batter, leaving two on base for the Rockies to end the inning.

Getting down to the end, the top of the fifth, Noxon took over at batting while Thadus took over for pitching. It was an effective move as he got the early 1-2-3 to force the Diamondbacks out.

Noxon had one more chance to stop Superior in the middle of the fifth. However, Jake Calloway doubled and stole third while he was at it, which ultimately led to more runs for the Rockies and the win.

“Our batting got a lot better, but still needs work for next week,” said Darrin Haskins, Superior Rockies head coach.

There was no love lost for Noxon who felt like it was a good battle between both teams.

“I think all the players did great, each team got a win,” said Shawna Wood, Noxon Diamondbacks head coach.
