Car show will go on

SUPERIOR - The Old Schoolhouse Rock Car Show will return for its fifteenth year on June 7.

Last year, the event was a success as car buffs brought at least 100 cars and congregated around the Old Schoolhouse on River Street.

The show is almost synonymous with summer just as the sunshine and kids riding their bikes in the streets.

This family event welcomes old cars and attendees from all over the state and elsewhere, which floods the streets of Superior the weekend of the event.

Along with gawking at cars, attendees will be welcomed by a variety of new vendors, mostly community based.

Currently, the car show organizers, who are all community volunteers, are meeting behind the scenes planning the last minute details for the show, which is roughly one month away. This includes lining up last minute sponsors, sign placement on local roads and the new shirts, which will be available at the event.

In the past there have been vendors who have sold cell phones and model cars.

Other entertainment on hand will include the radio station 105.9 Jack FM, secured by Monte Turner of the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s show almost fell apart because of the difficulty of trying to keep the show an all-volunteer event. However, the tradition will continue.

Rosie Schreckendgust, general manager of the Big Sky Motel, stepped forward to chair the Car Show Committee.

After this year, the car show will be hosted and organized by the chamber of commerce.

The show requires hours of volunteer work. Organizers plan, promote, collect prizes and find sponsors. All volunteers also work the event throughout the weekend making sure the show runs smoothly.

Jeff and Judy Carlson, and Gordon and Vicki Hendrick started the car show in 2000, which was so well received that the group decided to make it an annual event.

However, Jeff was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, and Judy asked the Mineral County Community Foundation to step in and help organize it.

The Hendricks organized the last two years, with 2012 as a memorial to Jeff who passed away in 2011.

At the end of last year’s car show, the Hendricks announced they needed to step away for personal reasons.

In keeping with the founders’ original intent, the car show is a fundraising event to provide grants to a diverse array of local non-profits in the Mineral County community.

MCCF also awards scholarships to qualifying seniors, and the car show helps with the fundraising. Without this event, these organizations would lose a sizable amount of yearly contributions.

The hope is that there will be more attendees in comparison to last year and previous years.
