Superior track falls short at final invitational
SUPERIOR – The Superior Track team competed in the Seeley-Swan Invitational on May 10.
The Superior girls and boys teams placed low among competing teams, however, many of the top teams in the conference were also on hand in Missoula. There were 17 competing girls schools in all, and 19 boys.
The boys finished sixteenth as a team with a score of 4.5, and the girls finished nineteenth with a score of 6.
Among the leaders for the Superior boys, Tanner Smith had a time of 12.87 seconds in the 100-meter dash. However, the time wasn’t enough for a high placement in the standings.
In shot put, two boys competed and threw 12 pounds. Alex Billet’s final was a 38-10 1/4, Tanner Smith had a 35-8 ½. Jarrod Tippens was disqualified.
“Jarrod missed the bus and didn’t compete on Saturday,” said Jamie Toivenen, Superior Track coach.
Smith and Billet competed in the discus competition as well; Tippens was disqualified, as he wasn’t in attendance.
Smith finished the day with a distance of 114-3, and Billet had a throw of 103-3.
In pole vault, Tucker Smith finished with an 11-6, and Tanner had a 10-6. Tanner competed in the long jump as well completing a distance of 19-1.
For the girls, Marissa Koke finished the 100-meter dash in 14.35 seconds.
Koke, who is one of the team leaders for girls track, also competes in multiple events every meet.
In javelin, she finished with a 95-7. She also had a 4-8 in the high jump.
In the 100-relay, the girls finished in 58.18 and competed as a team.
Emily Riddle had a 28-8 ¾ in shot put. Danielle Ewoniuk threw a 26-8 ½ and Morgan Sharp was disqualified.
Emily Riddle threw for an even 79 in discus.
Ewoniuk had a 78-8 in javelin, while Morgan Sharp had a 42-4. Medina Monie was disqualified. Monie vaulted a 6-6 also and Ewoniuk had the same finish.
Monie and Morgan Sharp were the only players who participated in the long jump. Both girls finished 12-3/4 and 10-11 ¾ respectively.
Considering that Superior was shorthanded and it was the last meet of the season, Toivenen was pleased with her team’s performance. She said her team will head to districts on May 15 at Polson.
