Savage Heat athletes advance to divisional meet
POLSON – The Hot Springs Savage Heat competed at the District 14C meet, getting some impressive performances from the athletes on the track and field team.
On Thursday, May 15, Hot Springs was in Polson, battling the other schools of their division in the run up to the Western Divisional Meet in Missoula.
The boys of the Hot Springs track and field earned a couple of first place finishes with Jarod White and Tanner Hoff winning events. The boy’s team finished second overall in the competition, tallying 147 team points. The girls of Hot Springs placed fifth with 17 team points.
White took home first in the triple jump competition; his final jump of 40-07.50 placed him on top of the competition, earning 10 points for the Savage Heat. Hot Springs teammate Trevor Paro placed third in the same competition with a jump of 37-04.25
Thrower Hoff, took home the prize in the javelin throw with the top performance of the day in the event. His effort of 155-03 got him the win over other District 14C competitors. Teammates Nate Gray, White, Blaine Carr and Addison Mueller also had top finishes in the event. Gray placed third with a throw of 141-04, White in fourth with a 137-01, Carr in sixth with a 124-01 and Mueller in ninth with a throw of 106-10.
The Hot Springs boys also did well in the long jump, with White taking third with a jump of 19-07, Paro fourth with a 19-06 and Jimmy Holland placing in fifth with a performance of 18-08.
In the high jump, Hoff had another impressive performance tying with teammate Jack Dolson for second place. Both athletes tallied a 1.78 in the final. Jamo Morgieau of Hot Springs tied with Trevor Lowery of St. Regis for fourth in the competition with a jump of 1.63.
Hoff continued his strong performances into the hurdles competition, where he took second place in both the 110-meter and 300-meter varieties, clocking in at 16.32 and 41.44 respectively. Holland also did well in the hurdles series placing fourth in each event, with a 16.32 in the short event and a 43.81 in the 300 meters.
The boys enjoyed further success on the track, with Anthony Byrns putting up impressive numbers in the dashes.
Byrns took second in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes with times of 23.20 and 53.20 respectively. In the 100-meter dash, Bryns earned a fourth place finish with an effort of 11.64, tying with competitors from Two Eagle River and his own teammate Trevor Paro. Dolson and Gray of Hot Springs also performed well in the 200, with Dolson taking fifth with a 25.26 and Gray clocking in at 25.69, for sixth place.
In the team competitions the Savage Heat pulled off an impressive team effort finishing in second in the 400-meter relay with a time of 47.53 and earning the same place in the longer 1,600-meter relay, where the boys put up a collective 3:41.40.
In the shot put, Addison Mueller took sixth with a throw of 34-11 and in the discus throw Gray took fifth with a108-02.50.
The longer distanced runs featured Joe DeTienne taking fourth in the 3,200-meter endurance competition with a time of 11:56.74, with Carr and James DeTienne finishing fifth and sixth in the 1,600-meter run. Carr finished with a time of 4:58.19 with James close behind at 4:59.74.
The 800-meter run concluded with the boys taking fourth, fifth and sixth in the competition. Carr finished with a 2:20.01, Ja. DeTienne with a 2:20.37, followed by Kane Lawson at 2:20.69.
The Savage Heat girls had a productive day at Districts as well with Rosa Dolson and Amanda Woods performing well.
Dolson finished in third in the high jump, with a jump of 1.37. She also had strong performances in both hurdle events, finishing in fourth in both events. In the 100-meter hurdles Dolson ended with a time of 19.49 and in the 300-meter event she clocked in at 53.59.
Woods excelled in the distance competitions taking fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:33.34 and sixth in the grueling 3,200-meters with an end time of 16:16.59.
The Savage Heat divisional track meet will begin on Friday, May 23 at Big Sky High School in Missoula.
