Superior Rockies baseball falls to Plains
SUPERIOR - The Superior Rockies played a doubleheader on the road May 17 against the Plains Pirates.
In the first game, Superior was defeated 14-0 after Pirates pitcher Derek Curry threw a no-hitter. Curry had nine strikeouts and one walk in the game.
Plains’ Esven Reyes went three-for-three with two home runs and Tucker Foster went three-for-three as well.
In game two, despite a furious comeback, the Rockies lost 8-7, in what was a higher scoring contest. Each team combined for 15 hits in the second game, and seven of those were for extra bases. Superior went after the Pirates early in this one, rattling starting pitcher Nate Zigler.
The Rockies had three straight hits to start the game and took a 1-0 lead.
Although Zigler was getting shook-up on the pitcher’s mound, he answered with a home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.
“Esven Reyes and Jake Weyers also had some big home runs in the game,” said Jon Zigler, organizer for the Clark Fork Valley Majors Baseball League.
Although the Pirates made an effort to stay ahead of the Rockies, there were still eight lead changes in the game, Jon Zigler said.
Coming into the last week of the regular season, the Superior Rockies have an overall record of 1-7.
However, the Pirates have already locked up the regular season title.
Superior heads to Noxon on May 24 to finish the season. The Pirates will host Thompson Falls at home even though they have already secured a postseason bid.
The league tournament will be on Saturday, June 7th in Plains.
