Superior track dominates district meet in Polson
SUPERIOR - The district meet for the 14C conference was no match for Superior May 15.
Every member of the track team qualified for divisionals next week, and if they continue to win events, Superior will be moving on to state in two weeks at Great Falls.
“I think they did amazing,” said Jamie Toivenen, Superior track coach. “For 10 kids total, that’s pretty remarkable.”
Toivenen said Tanner Smith qualified in every event he competed in, and Jarrod Tippens swept discus.
Marissa Koke and Danielle Ewoniuk both participated in the 100-meter dash.
Koke finished fourth overall timing in at 14.37 seconds. Ewoniuk was in sixth with 15.08 seconds.
As a team, the girls finished third in the 100-meter relay, picking up six points.
Medina Monie, Ewoniuk, Morgan Sharp and Koke participated and were the bright spot for Superior.
Koke competed in the high jump as well, taking fifth place honors with two points, and a height of 1.22 meters.
Ewoniuk and Monie tied for fourth place in pole vault, receiving three points on 1.98 meters.
In long jump, Sharp placed fourteenth with 11-7 ½, while Monie tailed behind her finishing fifteenth with 11-5.
Sharp was the only girl to place in the triple jump, but finished in eighth place with a height of 23-7.
Emily Riddle was third in shot put, gaining six points while throwing 30-6 ½. Ewoniuk also placed eighth in the competition finishing 25-10.
Riddle followed up by knocking over the competition and claiming the first place spot in discus. She earned 10 points with a distance of 88-3.
Koke was fifth in javelin on a distance of 91-3 ½. Ewoniuk was in sixth with a 90-2.
On the boy’s side, Nathan Lapinski tied for tenth place with two other competitors in the 800-meter run.
Lapinski also competed in the 1600-meter run finishing third with a final time of 4:55.33.
He also ran the 3200, tying in fifth.
Tanner Smith ran away in pole vault, grabbing the second spot with a distance of 3.35 meters.
Tucker Smith tied at third with Kyle Couture of Charlo with 3.23 meters.
In long jump, Tanner finished in second with 19-9 ½. He finished second as well in triple jump, with 39-2 ¾.
Alex Billet finished second in shot put with a throwing distance of 39-2. Tanner was in fourth with 36-10 ½ and Tippens was in seventh at 34-9.
Tippens would take first place in the discus throw as well with a distance of 130-8. Billet also competed in that event taking second and throwing 115-8. Tanner was in fourth with 111-11.
Toivenen said that next week at state, all the Superior competitors need to at least place fifth to be invited to state the following week, which also concludes the track season.
If no one qualifies, than Superior’s season will come to a close and they will welcome new freshman competitors in the fall.
