ST. REGIS – The close of the school year not only marks the beginning of summer fun, but the end of student athletics as well.

Student athletes were presented with awards for sportsmanship and overall performance during the 2013-2014 season.

On May 22, coaches recognized both junior high and high school athletes for participation, in front of parents and community spectators in the St. Regis Elementary School cafeteria.

Some awards given out included most improved player, rookie of the year and the most valuable player.

In girls’ volleyball, Madison Hill was named rookie of the year, while Gabby Moeller was the most valuable player.

“We made it to divisionals for the first time in quite a few years,” said coach Amy Cheesman.

Cheerleading and flag football were also recognized and included.

Flag football coach Tyler Nordby would like to continue the tradition of flag football in St. Regis. The season is usually played in the early fall and starts prior to the first day of school. Nordby joked that their season was cut short because 12 other teams cancelled on them for playing dirty, and cheating. Nordby believed it was more of his team’s motivated aggression to win.

The high school boys’ basketball team broke a 78-game losing streak back in December. The team included a mix of five eighth grade students and five high school students.

Dakota Wickham was the leading scorer of the team. Keenan Clute was also named as an outstanding bench player by coach Nordby.

“Keenan had a good year but came off the bench,” Nordby said to the audience. “He had a good time, but wasn’t goofing around.”

All student athletes were honored from junior basketball to girls’ volleyball. Some players were hand picked by their coaches and given wooden plaques for an outstanding season performance or for exceptional sportsmanship.

Even though everyone couldn’t leave with a wooden plaque, each player was awarded a paper certificate.

A lot of familiar faces took the floor to accept awards on behalf of their sport.

Arianna Jones, track star, was named the MVP of the girl’s basketball team for the season. Arianna was also recognized in volleyball.

Football coach Rob La Brie presented the current football team, which played in cooperation with other schools in the area. Next year, St. Regis will go back to having their own football team, according to La Brie.

Mark Field’s team of junior high basketball girls presented him with a signed ball, and also gave flowers to their assistant coach Dawn Palmer.

Prior to this celebration, 11 of the girls were recognized for their efforts in basketball.

“This team competed at a very high level this year and worked hard in practice,” Field said.

Although this is a farewell of sorts to seniors who graduated May 25, the recognition may be enough to motivate younger freshman or junior high students who are looking to make more of a difference for their team in order to win that coveted wooden plaque.
