Superior track nears season's completion

SUPERIOR - The Superior track team inched closer to the season finale this week, competing in the divisional meet in Missoula.

The two-day invitational spanned over the Memorial Day weekend, May 23-24. Out of 20 teams, the boys placed 14 with six points, while the girls accumulated two points for a finish of 18.

Among noticeable competitors, Alex Billet placed seventh for the boys in shot put. Billet threw for 40-11.

Tanner Smith was right behind him with a ninth place finish with a throw of 38-5 3/4.

In discus, three Superior athletes earned high placing scores. Jarrod Tippens finished at third with 135-11.

Billet finished in eight with a distance of 119, and Smith just missed the top ten cut with an eleventh place finish and a distance of 135-5.

Smith placed in pole vault as well, finishing seventh at a final distance of 11.

Tucker Smith was disqualified from the competition.

Tanner Smith was the only Superior athlete to place in the long jump event. He finished tenth with a height of 18-11 1/2. He was also the sole placer in the triple jump event. He fared better, ending the day at the eight spot with a finish of 39-11 1/2.

Marissa Koke and Danielle Ewoniuk led the girls in multiple events.

Koke finished the 100-meter dash in 14.3 seconds, which was good for eighteenth place.

Ewoniuk finished at 20 with a time of 14.9 seconds.

In the 4 x 100 relay, the Superior girls team that included Medina Monie, Ewoniuk, Morgan Sharp and Koke finished in 57.9 seconds, or 12 overall.

Emily Riddle tied in shot put with Lindsey Tryon of Charlo with a throwing distance of 29-6 1/2.

Riddle followed-up with a thirteenth place finish in the discus event. Riddle threw for 81-11.

Koke took ninth place in javelin, with a distance of 98-7.

Ewoniuk was just below her with a seventeenth place finish walking out with a 83-3 anyway.

Koke was the sole placer for Superior in the high jump with a fifth place finish and jumping height of 4-8.

In pole vault, Ewoniuk finished in a respectable eighth place, while grabbing a distance of seven.

Monie tied at 13 in the same event with Mary Strumpfer of Seeley-Swan. Both girls had a six.

The Superior track team will look to make one final push towards glory as they finish up the season next week at Great Falls for the state event.
