Trotters take first at divisionals

MISSOULA – The girls of the Plains track and field team took first place at the Western B Meet this weekend. 

The two-day Western B Divisional track meet was held at Missoula County Stadium, with some events taking place on Friday, May 23 and competition concluding on Saturday, May 24. 

Following the two-day competition, with six events completed, the girls of Plains are riding high, sending a number of athletes to the State Meet after compiling 158 team points.

The next closest team was Bigfork with 93. 

The boy’s teams finished in seventh place with 31 team points.  

Despite battling a sore hamstring, Hailey Phillips still managed to put up a strong performance at the divisional meet, taking first in three separate events. 

In the 300-meter hurdles, Phillips set the divisional record with a time of 44.95. She also had a standout performance in the 200-meter dash, where she ran a season best time of 26.31 on her way to victory in the event. 

In the 200-meter dash, Phillips will be joined by two of her teammates at the state meet in Butte. Nicole Rehbein took second clocking in at 26.92 and Shannon Dimond took sixth with a time of 27.91. 

In yet another first place finish, Phillips took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.82. 

In the 400-meter dash, Phillips placed in second, with a time of 60.32. Her teammate, Rehbein finished close behind in third, clocking in at 63.50. 

Rehbein earned her own first place finish in the 100-meter dash, running a 13.19. Close behind was Kayla Holmes who took second with a time of 13.51. 

In the 800-meter run, Kimberly Earhart took fourth, clocking in at 2:27.72. 

The Trotters experienced success in the distance events as well, with Earhart placing second after running a 5:31.77 in the 1,600-meters. Demi Horton of Plains finished fifth in the event with a time of 5:36.79.

In the 3,200, Horton took third after crossing the finish line with a 12:04.93. 

The Plains girls did not disappoint in the throwing events, receiving especially strong performances in the shot put throw. 

Leah Thompson took second in the competition with a throw of 37-9 and Holmes finished in third with a performance of 36-7. 

Thompson would go on to take first in the discus throw, with a 121 ½ followed by Holmes who threw a 119-8.

Carley VonHeeder took first in the javelin event, throwing a 121-11. Earhart placed close behind in second with a 116-9. 

The relay team from Plains took home first in the 400-meter competition as Holmes, Rehbein, Corle Morefield and Dimond blew away the competition, clocking in at 52.50. 

In the triple jump, Morefield took sixth after jumping a 31-2 ½. 

The Horsemen also had their share of standout performances. 

Ben Gorham took second place in the shot put throw, finishing with a final throw of 47-3. 

Gorham placed second in the discus throw as well, after an effort of 140-3. Wyatt Winebrenner took fifth in the competition with a throw of 132-1.

Winebrenner added a fifth place finish in the javelin throw ending with a performance of 158-4.  

In the 3,200-meter run Russell Kujala took fourth with a time of 11:09.41. 

Kujala also took fifth in the 1,600-meter race clocking in at 4:52.40.

In the 800-meter race Aaron Garrison placed sixth, finishing with a time of 2:13.54. 

The top six finishers from each event will move onto the state tournament in Butte, scheduled to kick off on Friday, May 30.
