GERALDINE – The St. Regis Tigers faced off against the junior varsity team from Geraldine/Highwood last week and came away with a win, beating their opponents 49-26.

Head Coach Rob LaBrie said his team was a little intimidated at first when they saw their opponents trophy case full of state championship trophies but they were able to regain their composure and take the field with confidence.

“It was a really good game,” LaBrie said. “They played really well. I told them they needed to get over their fear and sure enough, that’s what they did.”

The victory didn’t come easy for the Tigers as at the end of the first quarter of play, Geraldine/Highwood had the lead.  In the second quarter, the Tigers managed to take the lead with the score at the half 20-13.

In the second half, the Tigers would hit their stride, literally. LaBrie said his team demonstrated their newfound confidence against a storied program by keeping their wits about them and getting it done on the ground. He also said the team’s defense showed up.

“We started to gain a lot of momentum and it kept building,” LaBrie said. “We were physical. Our tackling form was much improved from our last game against Alberton. They really started to tackle well.”

At the end of the third quarter, the score was 41-13. The team took advantage of their lead to give some of their freshmen some playing time and the game ended with the score 49-26. LaBrie said he did make sure his players didn’t let up against a team who has a reputation for tenacious play.

“Those guys never give up,” Labrie said. “I told my guys, no lead is safe because Geraldine/Highwood will never give up no matter what. You have to play four full quarters of football to beat this team and that’s what we did.”

The team will next face Mullan at home on Friday with kickoff at 3 p.m.
