NOXON – The Lady Red Devils have tasted success during their early season, defeating St. Regis and Troy.

The team played St. Regis on Saturday, Sept. 6, defeating the team 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-15).

McKenna Krueger paved the way for the team with 24 kills and six blocks.

According to Head Coach Teri Wilkinson, sophomore Natalie Beardsley also had a solid game.

“She was who we were relying heavily on to pick the tips Gabby (Moeller) was giving us,” Coach Wilkinson said.

Sara Webley added 13 assists and 14 digs for Noxon, while Moeller led the team with 17 digs and three kills.

“The girls performed well against St. Regis,” Coach Wilkinson said of her 15 girls.

Even with a strong performance, the Lady Red Devils have some work to do.

“We still have some things that we need to tighten up,” Coach Wilkinson said. “For instance (Moeller) was not hitting, she was tipping over our block and it took us quite awhile to get that covered, so we will be working on tip coverage this week.”

The team had been focusing on the small things the past week such as missed serves and shanks. The goal is to continue to improve on that, while adding some intense coverage work to the list of to dos.

Overall, Coach Wilkinson was happy to get another win added to their tally. Noxon is now 1-0 in league matches and 2-0 overall.

“It feels awesome to get another early season win, especially over St. Regis as I think they will be one of the top teams in the district,” Coach Wilkinson explained. “It has been a long time since this group of girls has had the chance to have this much success during a volleyball season.”

During their game against Troy on Thursday, Sept. 4, the team defeated their opponents 3-1 (25-18, 25-10, 25-27, 25-9).

Krueger again showed a solid performance, bringing in eight kills and four blocks. The Zavoianu sisters also added to the team, with Michelle bringing in seven digs and Nicky with four aces.

Although early, so far all indicators point to the Lady Red Devils having a strong rest of the season.

“I do think if they continue to work hard and stay positive that they will have the opportunity to have a very successful season,” Coach Wilkinson said.
