ALBERTON – In one of the few cross county match ups during the 2014-2015 volleyball season, Superior and Alberton faced off against each other on the court for Mineral County volleyball supremacy bragging rights.

Both teams were coming off a week where they were handed a few defeats at the hands of non Mineral County teams so both were looking for a win. The two teams appeared to be evenly matched when it came to size and athleticism but eventually, the offensive tools of the Lady Bobcats would prove too much for the Lady Panthers.

In the first set, the team from Superior was out to a strong lead with the score 13-2. Alberton would get back into the match driving the score to 24-16 but the Lady Bobcats would finish out the first set with a score of 25-20.

Alberton was out to an 8-6 lead in the second set but Superior answered back taking the lead 11-10. They would eventually win the set 25-11 on the strong offensive showing from Danielle Ewoniuk.

The two teams were neck and neck in the third set but Superior eventually began to pull away on more offense from Ewoniuk. Out to a commanding lead of 19-7, Superior looked poise to put the match away. They would win the set 25-11 and the match in straight sets.

Later in the week, Superior would get another win against Two Eagle River and again, they did it in straight sets. Ewoniuk had three of the team’s 11 kills. Marissa Koke had two blocks. Jordan Mueller had eight aces and five assists.

Superior defeated Two Eagle River, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22. Alberton also faced more action during the week, facing off against Lincoln in a five set marathon match.

After winning the first set, Alberton would drop the next two. The team won the fourth but Lincoln finished them off in the fifth on some strong serving. The Alberton team suffered 16 aces at the hands of their opponents despite leading the match in kills, blocks and assists.

Olivia Taylor had 18 kills, four blocks and six aces. Deveyn Dutt had six digs on defense and Becca Plutt had 28 assists.

The Alberton Lady Panthers have two upcoming games this week, both on the road. The team will face Drummond on Thursday and then Phillipsburg on Saturday.

The Superior Lady Bobcats are also on the road as they have another cross county match up this week when they take on St. Regis on their brand new court floor on Thursday. The team will then head to Sanders County to play Noxon on Saturday.
