Obituary; Alice Mardell (Dewar) Monzie

| September 18, 2014 4:36 PM

Alice Mardell (Dewar) Monzie, 91, of Hood River, Ore., passed away Sept. 5, 2014, at the Hood River Care Center of natural causes. Alice was born July 30, 1923, at Rexford, Mont., to Jesse C. and Alice Adele (Stone) Dewar.

She married Joseph J. Monzie at Priest River, Idaho, on May 19, 1946. Alice and Joe spent their newly wed years around Priest River, Wash., until moving to Superior, Mont., in 1952 where the majority of their life was spent raising four sons.

Alice attended college at Northern Montana State College in Havre, Mont., and was a schoolteacher for four years until her first son was born. Her full-time profession for many years was wife and mother until after all her sons had graduated. She then worked for the Montana State Highway Division and later for the Montana State Liquor Control Board.

Alice enjoyed gardening, and especially her roses. She had a green thumb and she enjoyed growing a vegetable garden with her husband, Joe, for many years. She enjoyed family get-togethers (where she would cook for days prior to family arriving), time with her sisters, genealogy, scrapbooking, and in her later years attending church, Bible study, and watching western television shows.

After Joe passed, Alice moved to Hood River, where she lived in an independent living facility, Hawks Ridge Assisted Living, for five years. It was at Hawks Ridge where she attended church services. She loved and appreciated the nurturing, teachings and kindness from Ken and Eva Miles. They held a special place in her heart.

Alice is survived by sons Joseph and his wife, Cheryl, of Dawson, Ga., James and his wife, Patti Ann, of Hood River, Robert and his wife, Kathleen, of San Antonio, Texas, and John and his wife, Kathy, of Missoula, Mont. Alice was blessed with four grandchildren: Michele Cobb, of Dawson, Ga., Cameron Monzie, of Portland, Ore., Tyler Monzie and his wife, Vanessa, of Portland, and Sean Monzie, of San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her brother, James; and her sisters Lucille, Cora, Rose, Jessie and Margaret.

A family service will be planned for next summer where her ashes {along with her husband, Joseph’s} will be interred.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
