EUREKA – The Plains Trotters and Horsemen track teams got their season underway at the Eureka time trials last weekend.

Both the Plains girls and the Plains boys posted a strong performance in their first meet of the season earning a number of first place finishes.

Plains Head Coach Denise Montgomery was pleased with the performances of both squads.

“It was a great start to the season. It’s always good to get the first meet jitters out of the way,” Montgomery said.

Senior Hailey Phillips of Plains helped lead the girls through their strong start winning first place in three different events.

Phillips took first place in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 26.58.

Phillips also swept the two hurdle events, finishing in front of the pack in both the 100-meter and 300-meter variety.

She won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.05 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.48.

Throughout the day the Plains girls took home first in a number of other events.

Shannon Dimond won the 100-meter sprint, crossing the finish line with a time of 13.53.

Dimond also took third in the 200-meter event with a time of 27.64.

Kimberly Earhart took first in the 800-meter race winning with a time of 2:38.67.

Earhart finished second in the javelin event, with a throw of 126-02.50.

The girls also took first in the 400-meter relay, crossing the finish line with a time of 53.39.

In the throwing events the Trotters performed equally well taking home two top finishes.

VonHeeder earned a second place finish in the triple jump with a 30-07.

Montgomery noted Holmes throw was a personal record and came very close to tying the school’s record in the discuss, which stands at 137-11.

“Kayla Holmes had a monster throw in the disccus,” Montgomery said.

Holmes also threw to a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 34-09.50.

According to Montgomery, six members of the girls team have already prequalified for the state meet, which will take place in May at Kalispell.

Montgomery explained the team uses the average of the sixth place time in comparison to whether the time would place at states to determine if an athlete is eligible to prequalify for the state meet.

The Horsemen of Plains also had top finishes in a strong performance for the team at the time trials.

“The boys are working very hard,” Montgomery said.

Tyler Subatch took first in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line at 47.31.

Subatch also placed third in the javelin throw with a 127-10.

Branson Krebs earned a first place spot in the javelin throw, taking the prize with a 153-08.

Krebs also placed third in the long jump with a 17-08.
