County athletes compete at Top 10 meet

MISSOULA – The best track and field athletes across the state descended upon Missoula last week for the 17th Annual Russ Pilcher Top 10 track meet at Missoula County Stadium.

Sanders County was well represented at the meet of elite athletes with several local students taking part in the mid-season competition.

Athletes from the Plains Trotters excelled during the Top 10 competition notching a number of first place finishes.

Plains senior Hailey Phillips had a huge day at the track setting a meet record in the 300-meter hurdles, taking first in the event with a time of 44.21.

Phillips also took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.2

In the 110-meter hurdles event Phillips crossed the finish line third with a time of 15.66.

The Trotters also got wins in several throwing events.

Leah Thompson took first in the shot put event with a throw of 39-0.

Thompson also placed third in the discuss event with a throw of 121-8.

Kayla Holmes took first in the discuss event, earning the top finish with a throw of 139-3.

Holmes placed second in the shot put event with a throw of 37-8.

The Trotters placed two athletes in the javelin event as Carley VonHeeder took second and Kimberly Earhart placed fifth.

Vonheeder placed with a throw of 131-06 and Earhart threw to a 120-11.

The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks also had standout performances at last week’s Top 10 meet.

Autrey Hannum took first in the high jump event jumping to a 5-5.

A. Hannum also placed second in the long jump event with a jump of 16-1 and took third in the triple jump event with a 35-2.

In the javelin event A. Hannum placed third with a throw of 125-4.

Shey Hannum also placed for Thompson Falls in the long jump event.

S. Hannum took sixth with a jump of 16-2.      

On the boy’s side of the competition at the Top 10 meet, Bradley Wilson of the Noxon Red Devils placed in the 1,600-meter event.

Wilson took fifth in the event with a time of 4:41.63.

Athletes who partook in the top ten meet in Missoula last week were also active in competitions over the weekend, helping thier full track and field squads at meets in Arlee for Noxon and Whitefish for Plains, Hot Springs and Thompson Falls.

Earlier this week, on Monday afternoon, the track and field squads from throughout Sanders County traveled to Hot Springs for the annual Sanders County Meet.

The county competition which took place at Plains High School last year, was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was moved up a day.

Teams from Hot Springs, Plains, Thompson Falls and Noxon were all in attendance.
