PLAINS – First Security Bank in Plains has begun collecting warm weather clothes for residents in need with their annual mitten tree.

The mitten tree began on December 1 and will be up throughout the month. The donated items will be placed on a tree in the bank, like ornaments. Residents can bring donations of warm weather clothing to the bank and, at a future date, everything will be given to the members of the community who need them. Donations to the bank will be taken to Plains Elementary School.

This is approximately the fifth year the bank has put up the tree. According to Kayla Reveir, one of the people behind the project, they always like doing something for the holidays; they wanted their contribution to be more personal, though, and decided to do something that would benefit people directly and get the community as a whole involved.

“We’re slowly getting the word out and having people trickle in [with donations],” said Reveir.

After the start of the new year, bank personnel will deliver everything to the school.

“Usually in the first week or two of January, we’ve got it sent over to them,” Reveir said.

While the tree will no longer be displayed, the bank will continue accepting donations to go to the school after the first of the year.
