The magic number is 3,894. That’s how many pounds of food has been collected so far in this year’s Mineral Community Hospital Holiday Food Drive, according to the program’s coordinator, Monte Turner.

“We will top two tons,” said Turner.

“You guys are wicked-awesome!” Monte exclaimed in an email to fellow program workers, which included a special thanks to Cory Billet and Bajin Smith, and Chris Watson for their work on making deliveries.

Twice as much food was donated as what was set as a goal for 2015.  The food will be delivered to the Mineral County Food Bank in Superior, as well as to the Alberton Food Pantry.  Also, about a dozen freshly cut local Christmas trees will be given to clients as an extra surprise when they pick up groceries.

The trees were part of a fundraiser between the hospital and the Mineral County Shooting Sports Association.  The trees that were not used in the fundraiser will be given to those who need one.

This is the third year of the food drive, which began in November, and runs until December 29.  Alberton Feed and Supply loaned two large horse troughs that are being used to collect donations.  Drop-off points includes Castle’s Market and Wells Fargo Bank in Superior, and Alberton Feed & Supply in Alberton, as well as at the St. Regis Senior Center, and at the Mineral Community Hospital and Assisted Living Facility.

On Saturday, baskets of toys and groceries were delivered to 77 families from Alberton to Saltese. Deliveries were coordinated by the Superior Lions club and Women in Timber of Superior. Once assembled, they were stored at Linda and Ken Christofferson’s shop, ready for pick up. There were three teams of Santas and Elves delivering the baskets to those in need.
