Radio station gets a boost

ST. REGIS – More people in Mineral County can now hear the broadcasts from a radio station in St. Regis after a new transmitter was recently installed, greatly improving the range of the signal.

Before the new equipment was installed, the range of the signal of the radio station manned by St. Regis high school students was effectively only within the town itself. Now, according to supervising teacher Brandon Braaten, listeners as far away as Superior can tune their radios to 101.3 FM and hear music as well as news about events at the school created by students themselves.

Braaten said the new range of the radio signal will expose a much larger proportion of Mineral County residents to what is going on at St. Regis schools.

“The transmitter is now broadcasting and I believe you can hear it all the way past the Superior airport,” Braaten said. “It was installed two weeks ago. It increased the range after the last transmitter was burned up in a power outage. Before we could only broadcast about a half mile.”

Braaten said, approximately two years ago, the range was similar to what it is currently. With the additional audience potential, Braaten said he and his students who operate the station may look to expand the variety of content that can be heard when people turn the dial to 101.3. He said they may begin including national news as well as syndicated material.
